Burnout and the Business of Becoming
Burnout and the Business of Becoming
Being a business owner is hard.
Becoming one? Even harder.
Recently, I wrapped up a business launch course (shout out to SIU SBDC 🙌🏾), and during our final retrospective, I asked a question that’s been living in the back of my mind for a while:
How does a business owner avoid burnout?
Because let’s be real, between marketing, packaging, production, emails, customer service, finances, and all the behind-the-scenes pieces people don’t see, burnout isn’t just a possibility. It's a real risk.
The Answers That Stuck With Me
During that final session, I expected some tactical tips, maybe something about time blocking or automations. But what I got was something deeper. Something softer. And honestly, something I needed to hear:
✨ “Find something that refills you outside of the business.”
✨ “Dive deeper into the parts of your business you actually love.”
✨ “Protect your sleep like your business depends on it. Because it does.”
Simple. Gentle. True.
And not one of those things required another to-do list.
Filling the Tank (Without More Hustle)
Here’s what I’ve learned: You can’t pour love and intention into your business if your cup is empty.
For me, it means making time to bake just for joy, not for sales. It means choosing to rest instead of tweaking that one last thing. It means letting a batch go out with love instead of perfection.
I’m learning that rest is productive. Joy is strategy. And sleep? Sleep is a business plan.
If You’re Building Something
Whether you're just getting started or deep in the trenches of growth, here’s your reminder:
💛 Your well-being is a business priority.
💛 You’re allowed to pause.
💛 You don’t have to earn rest. You just need it.
The journey of becoming is just as important as what you’re building. And no matter what season you’re in, don’t forget to protect your spark.
P.S. What do you do to avoid burnout? Drop it in the comments. I’d love to hear what fills you back up.
