You Don’t Have to Earn Rest

In this heartfelt blog post, founder LaWanda Stacy explores the emotional and cultural weight behind the idea that rest must be earned. Rooted in Southern upbringing and hustle culture, she reflects on the internal conflict between resting and building a business from the ground up. This post unpacks generational beliefs, small business owner burnout, and why rest is an essential, non-negotiable part of sustainable entrepreneurship. If you're learning how to slow down without guilt, this one's for you.

Rest while Building A business

You Don’t Have to Earn Rest

Rest, Lesson Learned and Still Learning

A lesson I’ve learned, and if I’m being honest, still learning, is that you don’t have to earn rest.

Read that again.

Rest isn’t a reward.
It’s not something you unlock after checking everything off.
It’s not a privilege.

It’s just rest.

The Way I Was Raised

I grew up in the South. Some folks debate that because I’m from Missouri, but let me set the record straight. I’m talking about the part of Missouri that should have been Arkansas. The kind of place where you crossed the state line into Arkansas just to get to the nearest Walmart. Yeah, that part.

I was raised around elders who believed in working hard, staying busy, and keeping your hands moving.
Phrases like:
🌀 “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop”
🌀 “Don’t just sit there, do something”
🌀 “A lazy person won’t eat”

Those words?
They weren’t just sayings.
They were stitched into the fabric of our daily lives.
And somewhere along the way, I started to believe that rest had to be earned.

Relearning in Real Time

Now here I am, building a business from the ground up. Wearing all the hats, writing all the emails, baking all the cookies. And still, I catch myself thinking, “Once I finish this last thing, then I can rest.” But here’s the truth that seasoned business owners love to remind me:

All the items are never done.

There’s always one more task.

One more box to tape.

One more caption to write.

One more batch to bake.

So if rest only comes after the to-do list is cleared, then it might never come at all.

Giving Myself Permission

I’m learning that rest is not the opposite of ambition.

It’s part of it.

I’m unlearning what I was taught and choosing something softer:

💛 Rest, even when there’s more to do

💛 Pause, even when it feels uncomfortable

💛 Trust, that slowing down doesn’t mean giving up

And maybe, just maybe, that’s what sustainable success looks like—one sweet pause at a time.

P.S. If no one has told you lately, you don’t have to earn your rest either.
It’s yours. Take it. Keep it. Share it.

Burnout, The Long-Distance Friend

Burnout, the Long-Distance Friend

Burnout and the Business of Becoming

Being a business owner is hard.
Becoming one? Even harder.

Recently, I wrapped up a business launch course (shout out to SIU SBDC 🙌🏾), and during our final retrospective, I asked a question that’s been living in the back of my mind for a while:

How does a business owner avoid burnout?

Because let’s be real, between marketing, packaging, production, emails, customer service, finances, and all the behind-the-scenes pieces people don’t see, burnout isn’t just a possibility. It's a real risk.

The Answers That Stuck With Me

During that final session, I expected some tactical tips, maybe something about time blocking or automations. But what I got was something deeper. Something softer. And honestly, something I needed to hear:

“Find something that refills you outside of the business.”
“Dive deeper into the parts of your business you actually love.”
“Protect your sleep like your business depends on it. Because it does.”

Simple. Gentle. True.
And not one of those things required another to-do list.

Filling the Tank (Without More Hustle)

Here’s what I’ve learned: You can’t pour love and intention into your business if your cup is empty.

For me, it means making time to bake just for joy, not for sales. It means choosing to rest instead of tweaking that one last thing. It means letting a batch go out with love instead of perfection.

I’m learning that rest is productive. Joy is strategy. And sleep? Sleep is a business plan.

If You’re Building Something

Whether you're just getting started or deep in the trenches of growth, here’s your reminder:

💛 Your well-being is a business priority.
💛 You’re allowed to pause.
💛 You don’t have to earn rest. You just need it.

The journey of becoming is just as important as what you’re building. And no matter what season you’re in, don’t forget to protect your spark.

P.S. What do you do to avoid burnout? Drop it in the comments. I’d love to hear what fills you back up.

Everyone Deserves Sweets

“Everyone Deserves Sweets” is more than a tagline—it’s the heart of The Sweets Agency.

Everyone Deserves Sweets

Everyone Deserves Sweets

Everyone Deserves Sweets

Our Brand Ethos & Mission

Last year, I found myself repeating a phrase that wouldn’t leave me: Everyone deserves sweets. At first, it was just a feeling—an idea that sweetness, in all forms, should be accessible, intentional, and personal. Over time, those three words became the heartbeat of The Sweets Agency. They reminded me why I started baking in the first place, and they now shape every single cookie that leaves our kitchen.

This phrase—Everyone Deserves Sweets—is more than a tagline. It’s our mission.

A Reminder in Every Box

Whether someone is celebrating a milestone, grieving a loss, or simply surviving a long week, we believe a cookie can do more than satisfy a craving. It can create a pause. A breath. A moment that says, You made it. You matter. You’re not alone.

Cookies have a way of cutting through the noise. They don’t ask questions. They don’t require explanations. They just show up with warmth and comfort—soft in the center, golden on the edges, and filled with the kind of joy that feels like home.

Why We Bake

At The Sweets Agency, we bake because we believe in connection. In care. In creating moments that make people feel seen, remembered, and celebrated. We’re not just selling cookies—we’re sending reminders that someone out there took the time to choose joy for you.

Every detail, from the fresh ingredients to the handwritten notes, is intentional. Every batch is small, handcrafted, and made with the hope that whoever receives it feels that same warmth we felt when it was first pulled from the oven.

More Than Cookies

So the next time you send a box from us—whether it’s to yourself or someone you love—know this:
You’re not just sending dessert.
You’re sending care.
You’re sending kindness.
You’re sending proof that sweetness belongs to all of us.

Because at the end of the day, everyone deserves sweets.

From Burnout to Brown Sugar: How Baking Brought Me Back to Life

Reconnecting with myself through a forgotten love!

The Sweets Agency

Chocolate Chip Cookies

From Burnout to Brown Sugar: How Baking Brought Me Back to Life

When deadlines drained me, dough revived me

Last year, I hit a wall. Professionally, I was managing projects, coordinating teams, solving problems left and right. But personally? I was running on empty. The pressure, the constant deadlines, the nonstop need to be “on”—it was all too much. I was burned out, and I knew something had to change.

Reconnecting with myself through a forgotten love

I needed something—anything—that wasn’t tied to performance or productivity. That’s when I returned to a long-lost love: baking.

At first, I wasn’t chasing a dream or a business idea. I was chasing peace. I needed a space where time slowed down. Where joy didn’t come from accomplishment, but from aroma. From texture. From memory.

Obsessing over the cookie that changed everything

I started small. One bowl. A few simple ingredients. And then, something shifted: I became fixated on perfecting the chocolate chip cookie. It felt like the ultimate symbol of comfort—timeless, familiar, and universally loved.

I tested so many batches. I adjusted butter temperatures, experimented with different sugars, swapped out chocolate types. But it wasn’t just about flavor. Every batch felt like a step back toward myself, and learning to be present.

When the cookie clicked, everything else did too

And then—finally—I nailed it. The perfect balance of chewy and crisp, sweet and salty. A cookie that felt nostalgic and new all at once.

That one cookie became the beginning of something beautiful:
🍪 The Sweets Agency — a small-batch dessert company rooted in nostalgia, emotional connection, and the belief that everyone deserves sweets.

It’s not just about cookies. It’s about what they represent:
Joy. Rest. Comfort. Connection.

Because sometimes, the thing that saves you doesn’t look like a grand gesture.
Sometimes, it’s a cookie.
